The Murder of Andrew Johnstone Esq., 1864 June 13

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 1
From the Collection:

The collection consists of letter from Frank B. Hayne, who owned a home called Beaumont in Flat Rock from 1909 to 1920, to the new owner of Beaumont, John S. Brown. The letter is dated December 7, 1933. Included with the letter is an account detailing the murder of Andrew Johnstone in North Carolina by a Confederate soldier who supposedly deserted his troops during the Civil War. Johnstone was the original owner of Beaumont. The account is dated June 13, 1864, and was copied by Johnstone's niece, Elizabeth Johnstone Coffin. A note at the end of the account written by Mrs. Lewis S. Jervey lists a man named Kuikendoll as the murderer, who escaped on a horse stolen from a plough and was later killed in Missouri.
