This collection consists of several documents written by members of the Hammonds family of Tennessee. Included are four letters, one list of expenditures, one promise of payment, one application for money order, and one account book. The first letter is from William R. Hammonds to Samuel W. Hammonds and family, dated November 18, 1861. The letter discusses the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln. The second letter is from John N. T. Hammonds to his uncle, dated February 10, 1862. It discusses John's time stationed at Cumberland Mountain during the Civil War. The third letter is from James T. Hammonds to his uncle Samuel Hammonds and family, dated June 2, 1862. The letter discusses an attack by Union soldiers on a depot and train that resulted in two thousand sick prisoners taken. The fourth letter is from James B. and William R. Hammonds to their uncle Samuel W. Hammonds, dated December 20, 1865. It concerns their travels to Illinois and their farm. The list of expenditures, dated January 21, 1861, concerns the purchase of cloth and books by John N. T. Hammonds. The promise of payment, dated September 1, 1890, outlines a promise on the part of Manerva Hammonds and W. Bair to pay Elisabeth Fetyer twenty four dollars. The application for money order is for eighteen dollars and was sent by Austin Bush from Tennessee to Sutcliffe and Company in Louisville, Kentucky. The account book is filled with lists of several expenditures and contains the date December 23, 1900. The front page contains the name William Hammonds.
