Walter M. Fitzgerald Speech Extracts, 1896 September
This broadside, apparently a newspaper supplement, explains Fitzgerald's opposition to an upcoming bill that would increase taxes in Tennessee. He blames fiscal policies of previous administrations, particularly in regard to railroad bonds, as well as improper or fraudulent behavior of several officials. He also claims that the comptroller, Harris, projects that there will be no deficit so a tax increase is unnecessary. Finally, he recommends cutting government expenses rather than raising taxes.
Also on the broadside are four small news items, about the Peary-Cornell Arctic Expedition, Mount Holyoke College, the Scott Jackson murder appeal, and the war in Armenia.
