This collection consists of materials documenting the life and work of Lee S. Greene. These materials include research, teaching material, student papers, photographs, newspaper clippings related to politics in Tennessee, and edited manuscripts. The majority of the documents relate to Greene's political research for his publications including Lead Me On: Frank Goad Clement and Tennessee Politics, To Foster Knowledge, Government in Tennessee, and Seven Ages: An Autobiography. The collection also houses election data, papers concerning key political issues, his work for the Tennessee Valley Authority and his teaching and reserach material from his time as a professor at the University of Tennessee.

Series I: Personal Papers, 1930-1974, contains biographical information, memiors, and personal press clippings. The majority of the documents in this series are correspondence (Sub-Series A) which relate to his personal and business life.

Series II: UTK Teaching Material, 1944-1982, contains material related to Greene's professional career and his time as a political science professor at the University of Tennessee including arbitrator reports, consititutional convention material, student papers, TVA handbooks, correspondence with collegues at UT, job offers, interviews, and annual reports from the political science department.

Series III: Governing the American Democracy, circa 1980, contains, manuscript galley proofs of Greene's book, titled Governing the American Democracy. These galley proofs include handwritten notes.

Series IV: Government in Tennessee, 1962-1982, contains research material related to Greene's publication, Government in Tennessee including; correspondence, maps, charts, interviews, research articles, and press releases related to the book. This series also contains both a published and personal manuscript of the work.

Series V: Lead Me On Publication Material, 1937-1978, consists primarily of research Greene conducted while writing the biography of Frank Clement. This series consists of Clement's campaign material (Sub-Series A), which houses biographical research, photographs, research related to his early days in office, campaign propaganda, election data, and commissions and convention research. Other materials include correspondence from Clement and his staff (Sub-Series B), interviews regarding his term in office (Sub-Series D), political research such as legislature passed and political issues (Sub-Series E), as well as speeches Clement gave. The series concludes with press releases related to the book and manuscript copies Lead Me On that include hand written edits.

Series VI: Seven Ages: An Autobiography, 1986, contains a corrected copy and a manuscript copy of Lee Greene's autobiography.

Series VII: TTo Foster Knowledge, 1974-1984, contains research material used by Greene to write this work about the University of Tennessee including interviews, photographs, campus building research, and documents relating to the history of the university. This series also houses edited, proofed, and manuscript copies of the book.

Series VIII: Pulications, Research and Notes,1931-1985, contains material related to Greene's work and research beyond the publication of his books. Materials include articles written by Greene, Tennessee political research, including several books related to politics and the legislature in Tennessee, and newspaper clippings regarding various relevant political issues such as civil rights, elections, county research, and politicians.

Series IX: Oversized Material, 1912-1932, contains oversized photographs of Frank Clement during his time as governor, and election maps of Tennessee for both gubernatorial and presidential elections.
