Spacelab Life Sciences 1 (SLS-1) Information, 1983-1986
This collection contains the papers of Dr. Robert D. Lange and his work in the field of hematology. The bulk of the materials date from the 1960s through the 1990s. Materials include numerous slides, correspondence, publications, research materials, and more from his work with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the University of Tennessee Medical Research Center and Hospital (UTMRCH), Oak Ridge Associated Universities and Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORAU/ORNL), and many other organizations. Also included are articles and information on the field of hematology, including but not limited to space anemia, canine and human cyclic neutropenia and cyclic hematopoiesis, and, most importantly, erythropoiesis.
The material in this collection is arranged into ten series, many of which are further broken down into smaller sub-series.
Series I: Personal and Professional Information (1940s-1990s) contains certificates, plaques, autobiographies, scrapbooks, and other items that reflect the Lange's achievements.
Series II: Correspondence (1970s-1990s, undated) contains two sub-series: A. From Filing Cabinet contains correspondence from Lange's filing cabinet and remains in original order by the first initial of correspondent's last name or organization name. B. Loose Correspondence is organized by first initial of correspondent's last name or organization. There are also separate folders for No Last Name, business cards and contact, and miscellaneous (which contains a stamp and fax transactions).
Series III: Research Materials (1960s-1990s) contains several sub-series which are organized by project or article when known: A. Erythropoietin in the Anemia of End-Stage Renal Disease Chapter; B. Spaceflight Projects; C. Cyclic Hematopoiesis and Cyclic Neutropenia Projects; D. Matrex Agglutination: An Alternative to the Tanned Red Cell Technique for the Measurement of Erythropoietin Article; E. Regulation of Hematopoiesis in Rats...: II. Mechanisms of Anemia Article; F. cDNA Cloning of Erythropoiesis in RNA Article; G. Other Projects; and H. Other Notes.
Series IV: Articles (1911, 1940s-1990s) has five sub-series: A. Presentations by Lange; B. Articles by Lange; C. Lange's review material of Gunga et al article; D. Articles by other authors; and E. Bound publications by other authors. Series V: University of Tennessee and Management (1960s-1990s) is divided into three sub-series based on where the material came from: A. From filing cabinets; B. From folders; C. Loose materials. Each of the folders in the first and second sub-series remain in original division, but the third has been divided by topic (e.g. budget information, programs, etc.).
Series VI: Human Subject Committee for Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) (1970s-1990s) is divided into four sub-series: A. Meeting Information; B. Proposals and Project Information; C. Publications; and D. Other ORAU Material (which contains correspondence, forms, and regulation information).
Series VII: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) (1970s-1990s) is divided into four sub-series by programs or missions: A. Spacelab Missions; B. Cosmos 2044; C. Life Sciences Program; and D. Other Material which contains correspondences, NASA publications, and proposals.
Series VIII: Travel and Conferences (1966, 1970, 1980s-1990s) contains several folders divided by organization (eg. International Society of Hematology), conference topic (eg. International Symposium on Biosatellite Cosmos), or location when the organization and/or topic are not provided (eg. Florida Trip).
Series IX: Audiovisual Material (1960s-1990s, undated) contains three sub-series: A. Microscope and Photographic Slides; B. Pictures which includes photographs and art prints; and C. Audiocassettes which contain interviews, etc.
