This subseries documents Wilma Dykeman and James R. Stokely Jr.’s research into race relations, civil and religious rights, and the overall temperament of the South for their book Neither Black Nor White (1957) and their New York Times Magazine articles. The subseries also includes the most comprehensive research material for Will W. Alexander, the chief executive officer of the Commission on Interracial Cooperation, first president of Dillard University, and the subject of Seeds of Southern Change: The Life of Will Alexander (1962). The couple’s involvement in the Southern Regional Council is represented in the subseries as well with one linear foot devoted to the organization’s publications, correspondence, and ephemeral items.
