Tassel from the Casket of John Sevier, 1815, 1889
Originally dated from the original interment of John Sevier in Alabama in 1815, this tassel is now thought to have been placed on and subsequently lost from the casket during the 1889 ceremonial reinterment on the lawn of the Knox County, Tennessee courthouse. The note included with the item reads "A sister of Mrs. Manis found this tassel as it fell from the casket of John Sevier during his reinterment. She was a young girl and had been dismissed from school for the occassion [sic]. She concealed it for a while and later revealed it."
