Biographical/Historical Note
This group photograph consists of students and teachers at the Fontainebleau School in Chaumont, also known as the American Conservatory. The school was established during WWI with the intention of the United States improving their army bands. After the war, the school directors decided to relocate to the Louis XV wing of Chateau of Fontainebleau in 1921. Since then, an enormous number of famous music teachers have taken up positions there, including Nadia Boulanger, Camille Saint-Saens, and Maurice Ravel. In this photograph, Alfred Schmied can be seen, as well as Camille Decreaus and Nadia Boulanger.
