This broadside announces a lottery to be held for the benefit of East Tennessee College. It states that "11,000 tickets will be sold for $5.00 apiece, and prizes will range from $5,000 to $6. All prizes not claimed within twelve months shall be considered as relinquished for the benefit of the college." The lottery's organizers (Hugh L. White, Thomas McCorry, James Campbell, Robert Craighead, and John N. Gamble) "encourage all citizens to participate in order to ensure America's continued survival and prosperity, opening that If we are attached to the government under which we live - If we wish to have it transmitted to our posterity, let us unite in the support of Seminaries of learning; without them, our children must be ignorant; while ignorant, they will be ever liable to be misled by the designing, and finally, to be governed by some enterprising despot. Thus, they hope that the public will wholeheartedly support educational programs where youth of the present and succeeding generations, may have their minds prepared, in such a manner, as to make them ornaments to their families and useful to their country.
