Letter, James L. Scudder in Shelbyville, Tenn. to H. H. Thomas, 1867 September 21
ALS. States that A. J. Fletcher has answered his letter in regard to the reward for Thomas McEwer by saying that he was passing it on to Thomas. Has seen in the paper that the Governor made the reward in his proclamation dated September 20. Days that he has just learned that McEwer had been captured and is in custody of the sheriff before the date of the proclamation. If this is the case, then no one is entitled to the reward. In a postscript says that after writing the above he has learned that McEwer has in fact surrendered himself to the deputy sheriff James Phillips. Cites R. W. Jones, another officer, as the source for this information. Contains clerk's notations.
