Letter, John B. Cate in Benton, Tenn. to J. T. Griffith, 1868 February 28
ALS. Says that William Grady was elected Justice of the Peace and is a loyal
man and conformed to the proper oath procedures. Says that while there are procedural flaws in their oath taking, Mr. Carter and particularly Mr. Cole are loyal. Says that he does not understand what Griffith wishes to know in regard to the sheriff. States that the sheriff is known as loyal, but he is soft in many respects, and will recommend men I will not...I cannot afford to be quite so obliging...Many of his official returns have been sent back here for confirmation and have not been confirmed.
Says that names will be sent soon for appointment as commissioners. Contains clerk's notations.
