Letter, Leonidas C. Houk in Washington, D.C. to D. T. Boynton, 1881 December 11
AL. On the letterhead of the House of Representatives.
States that he has met with the President in support of Boynton's appointment. Believes that the President will make the reappointment. Discusses the finances of Boynton's office and suggests ways to redivide the budget and reorganize the office. Says that Boynton would get more work from the clerks if he paid them higher. Suggests that even if Boynton cut down his own salary to come up with the extra money he would still have a better paying position than any other East Tennessean, including myself.
Inquires of Boynton I presume you get my idea? I want to see my friends get some places under you and get some reasonable pay for their services.
Says that the friends he wishes to be taken care of are Acuff of Union, H. H. Brownlow (?), and Prof. Willoughby Murphy. States that he has not mentioned this before supporting his renomination because he did not wish to create the impression that he was trying to bulldoze
Boynton.
