John W. Fox Collection, 1864
This collection consists of one original letter and one reprinted letter written by John W. Fox during the American Civil War which discuss his life in the army and his religious faith.
In the first letter, Fox writes to Watson R. Anderson of the 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry from Head-Quarters in the District of Tennessee, Nashville, Tennessee. His letter details a sermon that he had previously attended and one that he hoped to attend, wherein the speaker was to be Rev. Col. Davisson.
Accompanying that letter is a newspaper clipping dated April 1, 1863, which carries the text of a letter written by Fox from Clarksville, Tennessee on February 19, 1863. He describes a soldier's life, its disappointments, deprivations and death in a few short sentences. He continues in quoting scripture that sustains him in the conviction to have full faith in God, while those around him quote the expression, "No one can be a Christian in the army."
