Letter and envelope from Union Civil War Soldier to sister, 1862 May 26
This collection consists of a letter written by a Civil War Soldier, Nathan, to his sister on May 26, 1862. Writing from Columbia, Tenn., to his sister, Rachel Crawford, in Kansasville, Wis., he talks of past correspondence with his sister, and others. He tells of company positions in Tennessee. He writes about Pittsburgh Landing (Battle of Shiloh), and how many regiments lost all their field officers and many companies lost their commandants. He notes that he has heard that union forces under the command of Sheldon were driven back 4 miles at Corinth, and that his regiment may go there to help.
Nathan tells his sister that even though she cannot fight in the war, she can help by giving a few kind words to some soldiers. He especially mentions that soldiers under the command of Major General McClellan should be given a good word. He concludes the letter by talking about the local blooms of Columbia, Tenn., and noting that the wheat will soon be ready to cut.
