Letter from John S. Dashiell to William K. Blair, 1843 November 14
Nashville 14th Nov 1843
William K. Blair Esq.
Dear Sir Bro.
A copy of the By Laws of your Lodge was handed to me this morning by Dr. Kenney for the approval of the Grand Lodge, that Body discontinued its labours the First-Week in October last, therefore your By Laws cannot be acted on until the next session of the Grand Lodge, you will therefore be governed by them until that time as there is no power but your [illegible] that can alter or change them. I have examined them carefully and find nothing therein contained that is not in conformity with the Rules of Masonry, with the exception of one thing which I hope you will not think me impertinent in mentioning, that is [fineing] a brother for non attendance. I think every Brother who is as high as the [illegible] is bound to attend when summoned and if this obligation to the Lodge does not incite him I do not think we should force him by a fine, this is only me opinion. We should always bear in mind what we owe as a duty to the Lodge, and the summons from whence it come. I send you by this mail 3 copies of the proceedings of the last Grand Lodge for the use of your Lodge.
Fraternally yours
John S. Dashiell G. Sec. G. L. Tenn.
