Noble B. Wiggins Letter, 1862 August 7
This collection consists of a letter with envelope from Corporal Noble B. Wiggins of the 42nd Ohio Regiment dated August 7, 1862, from the 42nd Ohio Infantry's Camp Virginia, located outside of Chattanooga, Tenn. The letter is mostly of a personal nature recounting several foraging expeditions his regiment was involved in. It provides an idea of the daily life of a Union soldier in camp as well as a soldier's feelings on the death and depravity he witnessed.
Wiggins speaks of his company's raiding activities in Tazwell, Tenn., listing the expeditions's acquisitions and mentioning the burning of secesh homes in the countryside and interactions with their owner's. He recounts his company's casualties as well as their prisoner of war counts. Wiggins also mentions several skirmishes which occurred in conjunction with the Bloody 16th Ohio Regiment and atrocities he witnessed throughout the countryside.
