Mildred Curley Scrapbook, 1942-1943
This collection houses six photograph albums and scrapbooks compiled by several individuals during the course of World War II. In the cases of World War II Album 1 and World War II Album 2, the creator could not be identified. Album 1 has wooden covers and a picture of Mt. Fuji on the front. It contains undated photographs of U. S. soldiers, military camps, and fighter jets in Japan in addition to photographs of Japanese women and cities. Album 2 contains photographs of the Western United States taken between 1942 and 1943. It may have belonged to a military recruit who took pictures as he traveled through California, Oregon, and Missouri.
Two scrapbooks dating from 1942 and 1943 belonged to Mildred Curley, an Iowa native who served in the U. S. Navy's WAVES program. These two items house newspaper clippings, correspondence, telegraphs, photographs, cards, and other ephemera that Curley collected during her training. Another scrapbook belonged to Philip Edmondson and contains Christmas cards, wedding announcements and invitations, correspondence, and newspaper clippings. Finally, the collection houses a school photograph album whose owner could not be identified.
