Chattanooga Tennessee September

Dear Father and Mother

I am happy to have the privilege of addressing you & with a few lines to let you know that I am well and getting along fine for as could be expected for We have Endured a great deal of hard ships of late I stated in my last letter of the 24th that I Received it while on the Battlefield Mother It done me a great deal of good I have been looking to get a letter from you for the last day or so I would of written sooner to you but you know how it has been since the first of September last I will give you a little history of our martches since that time on the first day we crossed the Tenn. River It was about twelve at night when we crosst--It was a job to get our train over for we had to cross on pontoons after we got a corsst We marched two mils and thare we stoped for the Remained of the night We had not hardly layed down When the order come to march We got up and Rosted some sow belly and ate a hard tack And was soon on our line of march The order was to march to Bridgeport Alabama We had a fatiguing martch for we had to go in the Rear of the train We arrived with in two miles of that place It got so dark that we could not get the train any farther We layed down about three hours on the night of the second the order was given for us to be Redy in a half hour We soon was Redy to cross What was colled the Big sandy mountain We onely traveld about four miles this was the third day for we had pull up every wagon We got our train up the mountain little after dark and I was detailed to go on picks I went on and stood all night and in the morn’g I was Releaved by our Company coming in the advance This was the fourth our company was throughed as skirmishers we marched over mountains and through thickets until after dark We wanted to get to the foot of big sand mountain whare thare was a learge spring and thare we encamped for one day and on the sixth we martched down a valley I did not learn she name of it we traveld
