William W. Daugherty Letter, 1864 April 13
Head Quarters 27th Ind Vols
Tullahoma Tenn April 13th/ 64
My dear Pa
I have received no letter since the one from Lizzie but taking it for granted that you have sent some I will continue to write. We are having very pleasant spring weather here as this time which will be taken advantage of to move the troops in the front Gen Hovey passed through here yesterday morning on his way to the front I must say that they have a very poor looking set of officers and if they do anything they will deceive me I think Col Dehart the best man I saw Parish Bartene and Buyers looked as if they had plenty of whiskey to drink Our Brig [Lauer?] called and gave Gen Hovey Some music which I suppose he appreciated I saw Robbins Lay &Holleday who seemed to be enjoying themselves Col Fesler received a letter from his wife yesterday in which she informed him that she had loaned all the money to the Col. Father so I suppose it will be impossible to send for the money I will try however and see what I can do We are getting in rumors to move but it is hard to tell when we will move There is some talk that we are to remain as the 12th Corps we will find out in a few days I hope you have good spring weather so as to enable you to have an Early Spring crop I feel like I should be there and I think I shall after September If you can not borrow sufficient money I think it would be advisable to trade some [food?] to get the house built I probably can not send you any money until next month I am in hopes however that you will send Maj Stone a bond which will satisfy him and offered that money Col [?] has taken command of the post Troops are constantly passing through here on heir way to the front I think the grand move will be made by the 10th of May and I have no doubt as to the result I think Gen Sherman will command in person in the advance from the front and with a force sufficient to overcome all obstacles He can be at Atlanta in three weeks from the time he starts I only fear that Longstreet will get into Kentucky but if Grant and Sherman move at the same time this will cause him to fall back
Give my love to Ma Frank, Billy Joe, Lizzie and Sallie
Affectionately yours
Will
