Correspondence and Land Deeds, 1927 April 7-1936 December 17

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 11
From the Collection:

This collection houses correspondence and legal documents showing the construction of the Indian Gap Road, which was intended to facilitate movement between East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. The state and local governments of both states, however, faced many obstacles in this collaboration. The road's success depended on the assurance that North Carolina would resume construction of the road upon reaching the Tennessee/North Carolina border. Community groups in Sevier county led by Judge Ambrose M. Paine did much of the research required to reach the necessary agreements between the two states.
