Letter, Elkanah Johnson to William Henry Johnson, 1884 August 1
Maryville 1st Aug 1884
Dear Son & Family
Your [?] glad to hear that you are settled and all well, would have wrote before this had I known where to write. We are all well, about done for my work except wheat threshing, fine season, most rain throughout the summer, & remember sunny, for a long time. I hear of as many as 40 loads hay lost in one place. We cut a little at the time, and got up good hay through the spring until near harvest Lumber was very good late, but like most Presidential years business is very flat now, there is a good lot of wheat to sell but I think it only bring about 75-ct. only one building in this neighborhood this season Mrs. Cahsion took in Old Gooden of war times two week ago
If everything goes on well will we expect to go and see you all sometime. better wait until hot season is over I guess your aunt Eliza writes occasionally we have been sending a weekly paper to her for six month last we cant start a map that shows to Post offices and railroads where she is, there was a new road finished to her place last spring she writes if she is at the past of country I think she is, it is about four times as far from Little rock by railroad as wagon road, it may be however if we go there that we should go some other road, Well I am writing in a bad time, and wanting to start to town right now, write often
Yours truly E. Johnson
