Biographical/Historical Note
Charles L. Stephenson was born in approximately 1815 in Maine. During the Civil War he served in the 139th Illinois Infantry for the Union Army. After the war he worked as a steamship inspector in Galena, Illinois. He and his wife Martha Benjamin (Washburn) Stephenson (1820-1909) had at least four children: Lizzie C. (1851-), Frederick W. Stephenson (1853-1913), Mattie B. (1855-), and Benjamin Washburn Stephenson (1860-1925).
