Almon C. Brown and Robert B. Thompson Records
An 1895 contract between Almon C. Brown of Cumberland Island, Ga., and Robert B. Thompson of London, England states that Brown will sell property in Overton County, Tenn., on which oil has been obtained to Thompson if no other bidders come forward in the next ten days. Attached to the contract is a "Prospectus of Oil Well Property in Overton County, Tennessee," which describes the location and production of the wells on the property. The prospectus also notes that drilling on these wells had stopped due to difficulties faced in transporting the oil to McMinnville, the closest town. It continues, however, saying that the Nashville & Knoxville Railroad is now only three miles away from the property, making transportation much simpler.
