Biographical/Historical Note
James K. Polk (1795-1849) served seven terms in Congress (1825-1839), one term as governor of Tennessee (1839-1841), and one term as U. S. President (1845-1849). Polk was born November 2, 1795 in Pineville, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina and died June 15, 1849 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee.
