Cary G. Branch Papers

 Collection
Identifier: MS-2294

  • Staff Only

This collection consists of a variety of documents: travel journals, undated photographs, letters, and a notebook of collected writings. The Cary G. Branch Papers, 1948-1992, mostly dates to the 1960s and 1970s. The letters and much of the content from Branch's journals are from these decades.

Series I - Journals, 1956-1992, include two travel journals and a journal on the maintenance and garden additions that Branch made at his home. One journal has accounts of Branch's trips to Nashville, Tenn., and Knoxville, Tenn., to visit family. It also includes a newspaper clipping of his sister's account of her vacation in California. There are detailed expense reports and day trips. Most of the trips are to other areas in Southwest America, especially California.

Series II - Black and white photographs - holds 10 pictures of various people and places. None of these are written on, and the information about when and where the photos were taken is lost.

Series III - Other items belonging to Cary G. Branch, 1948-1981, includes a series of letters from 1962-1963 to J. Thornton & Son and the Society for Hellenic Studies, regarding catalogue items on Roman Antiquities and the Journal of Hellenic Studies. There is also a notebook, compiled by Branch, which contains several limericks, poems, magazine and newspaper clippings, and epitaphs. Most of these are not dated. However, some of the clippings have dates, and there is a post-marked envelope containing clippings dated to 1948.

Cary G. Branch's copy of "The Branch, Harris, Jarvis, and Chinn Book: A Family Outline," compiled by Benjamin H. Branch, Jr., is located in the Special Collections Library's Rare Books unit (call number CS71 .B817 1964).
