Biographical/Historical Note
George Washington Campbell was born in Scotland on February 9, 1769. He immigrated with his parents to North Carolina in 1772. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (later Princeton) in 1794 and was soon after admitted to the bar in North Carolina. Campbell moved to Knoxville, Tennessee and practiced law there for several years before running for political offices. He was elected to Congress in 1803 and throughout his noted and long political career served as Secretary of the Treasury under President James Madison and Foreign Minister to Russia. He died in Nashville, Tennessee on February 17, 1848 at the age of seventy-nine.
William Charles Cole Claiborne was born to William and Mary Claiborne in Sussex County, Virginia in 1775. He served on the Tennessee State Supreme Court in 1796 and replaced Andrew Jackson in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1797. He married Elizabeth Lewis on August 2, 1799. Claiborne was appointed governor of the Territory of Mississippi in 1801 and governor of the Territory of Orleans in 1804. When the Territory of Orleans became the state of Louisiana in 1812, he became its first governor and served until 1816. Claiborne was later elected to the U.S. Senate and served from April 4, 1817 until his death on November 23, 1817.
