Biographical/Historical Note
Clinton Bowen Fisk was born in New York in 1828, but he spent his youth in Michigan. In 1862, he joined the U. S. Army, eventually rising to the rank of General. Although it was Lincoln who proposed Fisk's appointment to the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands, it was Johnson who officially appointed him to oversee the Bureau in Kentucky and Tennessee.
As part of his struggle to help African Americans gain rights, he assisted in the establishment of free schools for both white and African American children in the South. Fisk University in Nashville is also named after him.
After the Civil War, he got into business, named the chief financial officer of Southwest Pacific Railway. As a result, he relocated to New York City, eventually forming the firm of Clinton B. Fisk & Co., bankers and brokers. He died in 1890.
