Abstract

This letter, from Elizabeth Randolph's sisters-in-law (sisters of Meriwether Lewis Randolph) in 1837, contains their condolences on the death of their brother.

Biographical/Historical Note

Meriwether Lewis Randolph (1810-1837) was born to Thomas and Martha "Patsy" Jefferson Randolph, one of their at least eleven children. His siblings included sisters Virginia Trist (1801-1882), Cornelia (1799-1871), and Septimia Meikleham (1814-1887). They were grandchildren of Thomas Jefferson, their mother Patsy being his eldest child. Lewis married Elizabeth Martin (1815-1871) in 1835. Their only child together, Lewis Jackson Randolph was born in 1836 and died in 1841. The elder Lewis was a land speculator in Arkansas at the time of his death. Elizabeth later married Andrew Jackson Donelson (1799-1871) in 1840.
