Biographical/Historical Note
George Farragut (Jordi Farragut Mesquida), the father of Admiral David G. Farragut, was born in Minorca, Spain, on September 29, 1755. Farragut served in the American Revolutionary War. Along with wife Elizabeth Shine (1765–1808) and their children, Farragut lived in Knoxville from the late 1790s until 1806 at which time they moved to Louisiana where Farragut served as a sailing master in the U.S. Navy. Farragut died in Mississippi on June 4, 1817.
