Biographical/Historical Note

Born in Pickwick Dam, Tenn. in 1935, Charles Wright received his BA from Davidson College (NC) in 1957 and his MFA from the University of Iowa in 1963. His books of poetry include Black Zodiac (1997), which won both the Pulitzer Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Award, Chickamauga (1996), which claimed the 1996 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize, and Country Music: Selected Early Poems (1983), which won the National Book Award. In 1999, Wright was elected Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. He is currently the Souder Family Professor of English at the University of Virginia.
