Biographical/Historical Note

Joseph Linn King (b. 1810?) was founder of the King Printing Company, Knoxville mayor in 1846, co-organizer of the Knoxville and Charleston Railroad Co. in 1852, and Confederate soldier. With John H. Crozier and James M. Welcker, he purchased eight acres of land, which they deeded to the trustees of Gray Cemetery (now Old Gray Cemetery) after its incorporation in 1850. The three men were of the seven original members of the board of trustees for the cemetery, and King was secretary.
