Biographical/Historical Note
Reverend Mitchell could possibly be James Y. Mitchell, tenant farmer and Baptist preacher. His son Harry Leland Mitchell (1906-1989), sharecropper and union leader, founded the Southern Tenant Farmers Union in 1934. He served as secretary from 1934 to 1939 and 1941 to 1944, when he became president. The STFU merged into the National Farm Labor Union, of which Mitchell became the president (1945-1955).
