During the Civil War, Union soldiers captured Turley while selling cotton to Confederate soldiers and imprisoned him in Johnson's Island, Ohio, for three years. In 1866, Turley married Mary Ann McFarland (1840-1876), daughter of Robert and Mary Ann Scott McFarland. The couple had seven children: Mary McFarland, Margaret, Jessie, Annie, William H. Jr., Emma, and Ellen Nellie. Turley died September 20, 1899, and is buried in Old Gray Cemetery in Knox County.
