Biographical/Historical Note
Helen Keller (1880-1968) was an author, political activist, and disability rights advocate. Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, to Arthur and Catherine Keller. Keller lost her sight and hearing at a young age, but learned various ways of communicating in large part to her lifelong teacher and companion Anne Sullivan. Keller graduated from Radcliffe College, authored 14 books, and helped found the American Civil Liberties Union.
Francis "Frank" Keller was born in 1816 in Knox County, Tennessee, to David and Mary Fairfax Keller. He was the brother of Arthur Keller, therefor a paternail uncle of Helen. Frank married Mary Ann Crozier Keller (1819-1872) and together they had at least six children: Mary Moore, John Crozier, William Swan, Robert Alexander "R. A.", Thomas Wells, and Barton. Frank died in 1901 and is buried in New Gray Cemetery in Knox County.
