Biographical/Historical Note
The United Charities of Clarksville, Tenn., was established on December 19, 1910, to join representatives of different churches and agencies that were engaged in relief work for the poor of the city. According to the organization's constitution, the United Charities were charged with "creating a system of mutual help and co-operation between such agencies as will unify this great work, while yet not relieving the various churches or organizations of the responsibility of keeping in personal touch with the poor, for whom they feel especially responsible, of visiting and ministering to them spiritually, or of ascertaining that their needs are cared for." The group focused much of its work on children, prisons, and African Americans.
