Biographical/Historical Note
John La Farge was born to John and Louise (Biusse) La Farge in New York City on March 31, 1835. He married Margaret Mason Perry on October 15, 1860 and they had five children, Christopher, Oliver, John, Frances, and Emily. La Farge eventually became a prominent artist, illustrator, and author. He died on November 14, 1910 in Newport, Rhode Island.
The Merwin-Clayton Sales Company operated as an auction house in New York City from 1904 to 1912. It was founded by two former staff members of Bangs and Company.
