Abstract
This collection contains two letters from Eunice Susan (E. S.) Merrill to her brother Theodore Merrill, both written while she was attending the East Tennessee Female Institute in Knoxville, Tenn., around 1848. They each describe her days at school and transportation of the day.
Biographical/Historical Note
E. S. Merrill is likely Eunice Susan Merrill, daughter of Theodore and Susan Bangs Merrill. Born on October 28, 1821, in Sidney, Maine, she attended the East Tennessee Female Institute (formerly known as the Knoxville Female Academy) with Principal D. R. McAnully in 1848. She married George Kingsley in 1852. They had three children: George, Theodora, and Kate. On Dec. 22, 1891, she passed away in Boston, Massachusetts.
Theodore Merrill is possibly Theodore Dean Merrill, the son of Theodore and Susan Bangs Merrill. Born on April 30, 1823, in Sidney, Maine, he married Emily Elizabeth Wait in 1857. The couple had seven children: Abbie, Mary, Silas, Nathaniel, Clara, Eunice, and Walter. Theodore died on Jan. 23, 1887, in Sidney, Maine.
