This collection consists of the diary, dated 1917-1919, of Laura Elliott (later Simpson), a young woman from Nashville, Tenn. In her diary, which begins on the day that war was declared on Germany in 1917, she details her experience in the publishing business and her thoughts on the war.

Abstract

This collection consists of the diary, dated 1917-1919, of Laura Elliott (later Simpson), a young woman from Nashville, Tenn. In her diary, which begins on the day that war was declared on Germany in 1917, she details her experience in the publishing business and her thoughts on the war.

Biographical/Historical Note

Laura Norvell (Elliott) Simpson was born on May 16, 1884 to Frank Porterfield Elliott (1840-1916) and Moselle (Norvell) Elliott (1853-1927). Laura's maternal great-great-grandfather was Governor John Sevier. She grew up in Nashville, Tennessee in an affluent family and attended Harpeth Hall School. After graduating high school, Laura began work in the publishing business, writing for Southern Woman's Magazine and the Woman's Page of the Nashville Tennessean. She married William Thomas Simpson (1871-1946), a carpenter who later worked for the U. S. Postal Service. Laura died in 1964 and is buried with William in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee.
