The Chili Dean Papers, 1960s-1990 (bulk 1980s), contain the professional papers of Charles H. Chili Dean, Chairman of the TVA during the Nuclear Power Program in the 1980s. The collection includes publications (newspapers, reports, etc.), speeches and writings, power program material (finances, project information, nuclear power plant information, etc.), and administrative files (in-house memoranda, employee relations material, operation information, etc.).

Series I: Publications, 1978-1990, consists mainly of news articles on or by TVA, but there are also books, conference programs, organization newsletters, etc. It remains in original order and is divided into Sub-series A: News Articles, 1978-1990; Sub-series B: TVA Publications, 1980s; and Sub-series C: Other Publications, 1980s.

Series II: Speeches, Testimony, and Writings, 1980-1990, contains Dean's lectures, speeches, statements, testimony, and writings primarily while he was a TVA representative. It remains in the original order with original titles: Sub-series A: Speech and Lecture Files, 1981-1990; Sub-series B: Testimonial and Statement Files, 1981-1990; Sub-series C: The Great Pay Cap Caper Material, 1986-1989; and Sub-series D: Other Files, 1980-1988.

Series III: Power Program Material, 1965-1990, contains papers specifically documenting TVA's Power Programs, including Nuclear and Hydroelectric. These items include newspaper articles, in-house memoranda and correspondence, Congressional hearing testimonies and other material, load forecasts and financial information, etc. Original division was closely followed for this series, which includes Sub-series A: Nuclear History: The Hour of Power Series, 1981-1986, undated; Sub-series B: U. S. House of Representatives Nuclear Investigation Binders, 1986; Sub-series C: Nuclear History Files, 1965, ca. 1970s-1989; and Sub-series D: Power Program Files, 1966, 1978-1990, undated.

Series IV: Administration Files, 1969-1990, contains material related to the operations of the TVA, including in-house memos, operations reports, executive pay material, etc. It is sub-divided into Sub-series A: Alphabetized Subject Files, 1969-1990, which remains in original division and organization; Sub-series B: Chronological Review Material, 1975-1990, which remains in original division with some of the original titles (in quotation marks); Sub-series C: Itemized Executive Pay Material, 1977-1990, which remains in original division and order; and Sub-series D: Loose Material, 1960s-1990, which has been organized alphabetically by subject by the library.

Abstract

The Chili Dean Papers, 1960s-1990 (bulk 1980s), house the professional papers of Charles H. Chili Dean, Chairman of the TVA during the Nuclear Power Program in the 1980s. The collection includes publications (newspapers, reports, etc.), speeches and writings, power program material (finances, project information, nuclear power plant information, etc.), and administrative files (in-house memoranda, employee relations, operation information, etc.).

Biographical/Historical Note

Charles Henry Chili Dean, Jr. was born to Charles Henry and Helen (Ford) Dean of Knoxville, Tennessee on October 22, 1925. He graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy with his BA in 1947 and then served with the U. S. Marine Corps until 1950. After being released from active duty, Dean served for another 10 years in the Marine Corps Reserve. As a civilian, Dean worked for the Knoxville Utilities Board from 1959 to 1981 and served as general manager from 1971 to 1981. He also served as the Tennessee Valley Public Power Association director from 1977 to 1980 (including a term as president in 1977) and as a representative with the Knoxville Fertilizer Company from 1951 to 1959. From 1981 to 1988, he served as chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority's Board of Directors. Dean died in Knoxville on November 12, 1995.

Chili Dean married Lottie Lavender on December 30, 1947 and the couple had four children: Helen, James, Miles, and Camille.
