Biographical/Historical Note

John Haywood was born to Egbert and Sarah (Ware) Haywood in Halifax County, North Carolina on March 16, 1762. He served as North Carolina's Solicitor General (1790-1791) and Attorney General (1791-1793) before becoming a Judge in North Carolina's Superior Court (1793-1800) and compiling the earliest known series of law reports in the state. Haywood moved to Tennessee to practice law in 1807 and served as a Judge on the Tennessee Supreme Court (1818-1826) in addition to founding the Tennessee Antiquarian Society. He also interviewed many settlers and wrote several histories of Tennessee, including The Natural and Aboriginal History of Tennessee (in which he attempted to prove that the Native American tribes of Tennessee were descended from the ancient Hebrews) and Civil and Political History of the State of Tennessee (which documented the state's history from prehistoric times through statehood). Both works were published in 1823. Haywood died on December 22, 1826 in Nashville, Tennessee.
