Abstract
This collection houses a typescript copy of Mary U. Rothrock's Discovering Tennessee, a history of the state intended for use as an elementary school textbook.
Biographical/Historical Note
Mary Utopia Rothrock was born to John Thomas and Utopia Ada (Herron) Rothrock in Trenton, Tennessee on September 19, 1890. She earned her BS (1911) and MS (1912) from Vanderbilt University, her BLS (1922) from the New York State Library School in Albany, and her D. Litt. (1948) from the University of Chattanooga. Rothrock worked as an assistant at the New York State Library (1913-1914) before returning to Tennessee, where she served as the Head of the Circulation Department at Cossitt Library in Memphis (1914-1916), as a Librarian at Lawson McGhee Library in Knoxville (1916-1934), as Supervisor of the Tennessee Valley Authority's libraries (1923-1948), as a Library Consultant (1948-1951) and finally as a Librarian at the Knox County Library (beginning in 1949). She died on January 30, 1976 and is buried in Knoxville's Old Gray Cemetery.
