Abstract

This is an undated black and white photograph of Martha Johnson Patterson, daughter of President Andrew Johnson.

Biographical/Historical Note

Martha Johnson Patterson was born on October 25, 1828 in Greeneville, Tennessee to parents Andrew Johnson and Eliza McCardle. She attended Miss L.S. English's Female Seminary in Georgetown for some of her education. She married David T. Patterson on December 13,1855. They had two children; Andrew Johnson Patterson and Mary Belle Patterson. After the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, her father became the President of the United States. Her mother suffered from many illnesses, so she took over the responsibilities typically held by the First Lady. Martha died on July 10, 1901 and is buried in Andrew Johnson National Cemetery.
