This collection consists of two letters from Samuel Andrew Baker of Company E of the 44th Indiana Infantry written on January 28, 1862, and July 26, 1863. In the first letter, written to his father from South Carrollton, Kentucky, Baker discusses being fired upon while on guard duty. In the second letter, written to his brother-in-law from McMinnville, Tennessee, Baker mentions having his pocket picked while swimming and describes Fourth of July celebrations.

Abstract

Biographical/Historical Note

Samuel Andrew Baker was born in about 1844 in Indiana to Joseph Warren and Huldah (Convers) Baker. He had one older sister, Nancy Elizabeth, who was born on November 26, 1841. Samuel Baker enlisted in Company E of the 44th Indiana Infantry on November 22, 1861 and fought in multiple Southeastern states before being killed in a railroad accident on January 30, 1865. Nancy married William Young Wells (1840-1922) on December 7, 1861 and died on October 13, 1910.
