This collection largely contains legal and financial papers documenting the lives of John W. Green and Ellen (McClung) Green. Among these materials are receipts, rental property records, deeds, and wills.
This collection also includes some material documenting Ellen's parents and other ancestors, the McClung family, including her parents, Frank H. and Eliza Mills McClung. Among these materials are family photographs, diaries and school books of Eliza Ann Mills McClung and a large scrapbook of newspaper clippings, photographs, and more documenting various members of the family.

Biographical/Historical Note
John Webb Green was born to Francis Marion and Susan (Webb) Green on June 9, 1859 in Oxford, Mississippi. He graduated from the Webb School in Bellbuckle, Tennessee, and proceeded to read law under Major T. S. Webb. He was licensed to practice on September 29, 1880 and opened his own practice in Knoxville, Tennessee. In addition to this practice, Green served on the Supreme Court in 1902 and 1935 and on the Court of Appeals in 1916. He also served as Chairman of Education, Trustee of the Eastern State Hospital, Chairman of the Committee on Admission to Practice in the Federal Courts of Knoxville, and Trustee of the Lawson-McGhee Library. He died on May 26, 1957.
Ellen Marshall McClung was born on May 23, 1872 to Franklin Henry (1828-1898) and Eliza Ann Mills (1833-1881) McClung. She married John Green on January 26, 1897. With her husband, she traveled around the world and maintained an estate on Black Oak Ridge. Ellen McClung died on May 13, 1956.

Acquisition Note
The estate of Judge John W. Green donated these materials to Special Collections between 1957 and 1960.
