Abstract

This collection consists of a hand-written obituary notice for Brigadier General James P. Brownlow, copied from the New York Herald in 1879.

Biographical/Historical Note

James Patton Brownlow was born in 1842 to William Gannaway and Eliza A. (O'Brien) Brownlow. During the Civil War, he served with the Fourth Tennessee Infantry (USA) and with the First East Tennessee Cavalry (USA). He proved himself a distinguished officer, and was promoted to Brigadier General in June of 1865. He died on May 26, 1879, in Knoxville, Tennessee.
