Biographical/Historical Note
The U. S. Navy commissioned its first aircraft carrier in 1922, and by the time of the Second World War, carriers replaced battleships as the best weapon of the seas. At the war's end, the navy had eighteen aircraft and only eight ships. Today, the Navy has over 4,000 operational aircraft but only 277 ships in active service.
