Biographical/Historical Note

C. M. McClung & Co. was a wholesale and mail-order supplier of hardware, stoves, and other goods, located on Jackson Avenue in downtown Knoxville. The company dates back to 1820 when James Cowan started a general store on Gay Street. In 1859 this enterprise became the firm of Cowan, McClung, & Co. In 1884, Calvin Morgan McClung bought the business's wholesale hardware division, which he named after himself. The first Jackson Avenue warehouses were built in 1893. The company went out of business in 1971. Despite plans to turn the warehouses into residential lofts, several of the warehouses were destroyed by fire in 2007.
