Biographical/Historical Note

The Illinois Central Railroad Company was chartered in 1851 after receiving the first federal land grant for a railway in 1850. Its first line, completed in 1856, ran the length of Illinois from Galena to Cairo. In the 1870s and 1880s, the railroad expanded through Mississippi, Kentucky, and Tennessee.
