Biographical/Historical Note

Joseph Stewart was born on April 24, 1827 in Salem Township, Ohio. He married Martha Emily Culver (1831-1871) of New York on October 1, 1849 and the couple had eight children: Catherine Elizabeth (born 1850), Ella Louisa (Stewart) Shelton (1852-1929), Emma Susan (Stewart) Cope (born 1854), Franklin Amos (1857-1927), Enos Watson (1859-1936), Dayton Ellsworth (1862-1928), Harvey Newton (born 1867), and Martha Lorena (born 1870). Since the family lived in both Indiana and Ohio during the Civil War, Stewart may have served with either an Indiana or an Ohio regiment. After the war, he returned home to his family, by then living in Columbiana County, Ohio. Joseph Stewart died on August 21, 1911.
