John D. Messinger wrote this letter to his friend E. Smith Woodworth from Pulaski, Tennessee on November 20, 1864. In it, Messinger discusses Lincoln's victory in the recent presidential election and Confederate troop movements in Tennessee. Abstract

John D. Messinger wrote this letter to his friend E. Smith Woodworth from Pulaski, Tennessee on November 20, 1864. In it, Messinger discusses Lincoln's victory in the recent presidential election and Confederate troop movements in Tennessee. He also expresses his hope that the Union will soon win the war so that he can return home.

Biographical/Historical Note

John D. Messinger was born in about 1837 in Ohio. He enlisted in the Union Army as a Sergeant on August 8, 1862 and was promoted to First Sergeant on August 21, 1862. He joined Company D of the 104th Ohio Infantry (which participated in the Siege of Knoxville and the Atlanta Campaign) on August 30, 1862. He was demoted to Private at his own request on April 7, 1865 and mustered out with the rest of his unit in Greensboro, North Carolina on June 17, 1865. He later married Asenath [maiden name unknown] and moved to Florida, where he died on October 23, 1887.
